The term yoga originates from Sanskrit and originally means “connection” – connecting the body and consciousness, oneself and the inner self.
Modern yoga generally emphasizes postures, and many practitioners only pursue the side effects of yoga such as fitness and shaping, without understanding the true essence and purpose of yoga.
Practicing postures does help to deepen meditation, but meditation is the only way to establish a connection with the inner self and reach a higher level of consciousness.
