Asana is a Sanskrit word that means “posture,” “seat,” or “position.

Posture is the body posture we adopt during practice.

Each posture has its own Sanskrit name.

Almost all Sanskrit names for postures end with ‘Asana’.

For example, the lotus style is named Padmasana, and the tree style is named Vrikshasana.

The names of many postures come from the shapes and movements of animals as well as mythological characters.
